January Newsletter - January 6, 2008

“I made no resolutions for the New Year. The habit of making plans, of criticizing, sanctioning and molding my life, is too much of a daily event for me.” ~Anaïs Nin

That quote is, in fact, true for me. This year my only resolution is to finally admit that I fully intend to continue all the same ridiculous behaviors I indulged in last year... but this year they will mean more.

Peter Mulvey’s song “Tender Blindspot” (featured on his new album NOTES FROM ELSEWHERE) starts, “It’s cold, but at least the sun is out...” Today is exactly like that. Of course later he says, “The days are short and gray. It is the hardest time of year” and unfortunately that is also true. It’s the afternoon of the 3rd and I’m taking a break from writing my rent check to jot down my latest happenings for you. I brought in the New Year singing with “Boo The Band” over at the Coach House Grill in Big Bend. It was nice to start the new year with some very special friends. That’s all that really matters in the end.

I’ve been writing a lot lately. Since my CD release, I’ve added about 5 songs to my set and a new one will be complete in a day or two. It’s nice to be writing again and it starts me thinking about (drum roll please) another album.... at some point. Probably not in 2008, but maybe 2009?

I only have one show of my own this month and it’s up in Sheboygan, WI. If you’re in the area, I hope you’ll come join us. Heidi Spencer will be opening and it doesn’t get much better than that.

Welcome to 2008 folks.
Congratulations, the future is here.

December Newsletter - December 3, 2007

“It’s coming on Christmas. They’re cutting down trees. They’re putting up reindeer and singing songs of joy and peace. Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on.”– Joni Mitchell (River)

Snow is everywhere. This time of year turns my busy street into a microcosm. We all hunker in for a long winter, frequent the same small grocery store for rations, commiserate in the same bar at night, and feel a little closer to each other when we realize we could stay like this forever and want for nothing. My neighbor across the street, Jason, has been the happiest addition to this world. He comes over often for a home cooked meal and the people at the bar down the street think we’re dating... in the spirit of the holidays, we don’t correct them. Anyway it’s nice to be part of a whole every once in awhile. Even if it’s for pretend.... especially if it’s for pretend.

This newsletter finds us at the end of another year. I am amazed when I look at the span of it. Spinal surgery in February, lots of studio work, Lindsay & Josh’s wedding, a beautiful week in Door County for Laura & Jonathan’s wedding, the “I’ve Read Salinger” release party, a new addition to my small group of most trusted friends and lots of shows. This December I am remembering the good and bad times that 2007 brought us. My heart is with all my friends who lost someone this year. It was more than a few. I trust that 2008 can do nothing but be happy, happy, happy.

I'm honored to again be nominated for "Best Acoustic Musician" and "Best Female Vocalist" by the readers of the Shepherd Express. Thank you to all of you who voted. The award ceremony is Tuesday night and I will let you know if I win. Although this year I might wait a day or two... you know, just to make sure.

I will brave the cold this Saturday for one of those lovely shows at the Mosaic. Please come. We will be warm there.

Happy Holidays to each of you. I hope you know just how important your continued support and presence is to me.

Keep Listening.
Love,
Lisa Gatewood

November Newsletter - November 1, 2007

"We clutched each other giddily
For safety and went in a barrel together
Over some Niagara."
– Ted Hughes

October felt like that... in a barrel together over some Niagara. What an adventure we’ve had! I love November because it is dark and gray and just cold enough to wear a scarf and put more blankets on my bed. Today is actually pretty sunny and utterly foreign to my nature. But my feet still freeze here at my desk, so I am not so out of place. I am listening to a mix tape I am working on for my friend Peter and I think I will keep one for myself too because it’s fitting. Leonard Cohen is singing about a raincoat that is torn at the shoulder and a lock of someone’s hair. Does anyone actually keep locks of people’s hair? You know what, don’t tell me. I don’t think we need to share everything about ourselves.

Next week I’ll be off in a warmer location for a bit, but please check out Heidi Spencer & The Rare Birds over at Riverwest Commons (I’ll put the details below in the "Shows" section). I’m not even going to be here, folks, so what were you going to do that night anyway? When I come back I’ll be having a show at the same location and I really hope I’ll see you there.

I hope you’re all enjoying "I’ve Read Salinger". I’d be anxious to hear what you think of it. If you don’t have a copy yet, read on to find out where you can get one. I am overwhelmed by your support and generosity. Thank you to everyone who came out to the release party, everyone who bought a CD, everyone who lent a sympathetic ear in the weeks surrounding the release and to all my friends and family. Now we move onward and upward. I hope to see you out there.

Have a great November and a Happy Thanksgiving.
Love,
lisa gatewood
