Lisa Gatewood: News

March News - March 8, 2010

"Many things– such as loving, going to sleep or behaving unaffectedly– are done worst when we are trying hardest to do them." – C.S. Lewis

It’s Monday night and after working a 10 ½ hour day on 2 ½ hours of sleep, I’m eating leftover pasta out of the pan, because it’s all I have the wherewithal to do. March came in like a lamb, I think. Yesterday I opened my balcony door to air out the winter and let in the spring and today I walked all over downtown running errands without a coat on for the first time since fall. But in other parts of the world, there are signs that the earth is trying to shake us off like parasites. But I digress because I’m exhausted and delirious and it seems that all I do lately is try to trace fault lines with my fingertips.

I’m playing at Linneman’s Thursday night and I hope you will be there. I’ll be joined by two great songwriters, Jonathan Burks & Quinn Scharber. And thanks to the Onion’s AV CLUB for making this show their pick for Thursday night! Come out of your winter hiding places and remind me what you look like.

Love,
Lisa

January News - January 7, 2010

“Perhaps I am a bear, or some hibernating animal underneath, for the instinct to be half asleep all winter is so strong in me.” Anne Morrow Lindbergh

My dearest folks and folkettes,

I’ve been putting off writing my newsletter because… I don’t know… It’s too cold?  The Days are still too short?  All I want to do is sleep and watch episodes of The West Wing?  Who knows, but I’m writing now because I have to tell you about a show tomorrow night. That’s right, tomorrow. As in 1 day from now. Friday, January 8th. I’ll be playing Circle A’s Alive @ 8 Series (which, appropriately, starts at 8pm and goes until 10). I’m looking forward to sharing the bill with my good friend and fellow songwriter Ben Cervenka.

Here are the reasons you should come to the show tomorrow:

1)       Relatively speaking, it’s an early show. Come to Circle A from 8-10pm to see me and Ben (we’ll each play an hour, show starts PROMPTLY at 8pm) and you’ll still have time to do whatever you want afterwards.

2)       Ben is one of my favorite songwriters.  If you didn’t see him open for me a couple years ago at the Bremen (and even if you did), you should come out to this show.

3)       There are duets. Ben and I each wrote brand new pieces to be performed as duets at this show. These are two never-before-heard songs.

4)       Circle A is a very intimate venue. It’ll be a relaxed show with good friends, stiff drinks and snow flying around outside. Isn’t that the way you always imagined your grown-up life to be?

Hope to see you at the Circle A tomorrow. Details are below.  And happy New Year.  I, for one, am hoping 2010 and I can reach some sort of agreement.  We seem to want different things.

Love,

Lisa

December News - December 8, 2009

"When Christmas bells are swinging above the fields of snow, we hear sweet voices ringing from lands of long ago, and etched on vacant places are half-forgotten faces of friends we used to cherish, and loves we used to know."– Ella Wheeler Wilcox

Monday morning I was driving to work, there was a dusting of snow on the ground and for the first time this year I wore the coat I didn’t love because it was cold enough to justify it. I was listening to WMSE and Grant was on the air playing his regular mix of Monday morning alternative songs that propel you from your bed, to your shower, to your car, to your desk, to the rest of your week, whatever that may hold.

There are unexpected moments when everything in your life lines up for a brief moment. This was one of them. I had been out too late the night before sitting at the Tonic Tavern listening to Conrad Plymouth, one of my absolute favorite songwriters, play to a quiet room and then sit next to me at the bar to talk about the paths our lives may someday take. This Monday morning was hazy, sleepy and slow. Then Grant played a song I’d never heard before, "Genesis 30:3" by The Mountain Goats. Go to your iTunes, buy this song and you’ll know what I mean. It’s a hazy, sleepy, slow, gray slush, contemplative, beginning of winter, end of the decade, soft inside song. And for a brief moment I felt like this year was complete. That despite failed attempts at love and happiness and security, I had somehow wound up exactly where I was supposed to be. I had never felt so calm and so safe as I did at that stoplight on the corner where 1st Street splits off and KK begins to head over the river.

It lasted only those three minutes and twenty-six seconds, but it was good. I hope as this decade comes to a close you all find moments like that, whether they come from a song or somewhere within. When this decade began, I was 17. I had no idea what I had yet to accomplish or what I had yet to lose. In the scheme of things, 10 years is nothing, but these have been quite something.

I can’t wait to say goodbye to them with you as we kick off the holiday festivities this weekend at the Cactus Club. See you there. Also stay tuned for an announcement about a special holiday project I’m a part of. More details coming soon.

Happy holidays and happy new year.
Love
Lisa

November News - November 10, 2009

My Dearest Folks & Folkettes,

I’ve been listening to Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and various Christmas carols in heavy rotation for weeks now. I’m preparing for a month of performances in which I will perform none of my own material (which is unfortunate because that’s the only material I don’t have to rehearse). If I really wanted to, I could cut a little time off my research by listening to Bob Dylan’s new Christmas album (two birds, one stone). Say what you want about it, but I heard a few selections from it on Bob Reitman’s show and I didn’t think it was terrible. I mean, it’s Bob Dylan feeling the magic of the holiday season. Ain’t nothin’ wrong with a little holiday spirit.

Besides, if Jethro Tull can have a Christmas Album, so can Dylan.

I’m going to keep this short because I have a lot of song-learnin’ to do. You know the drill, the show info is below. Stay tuned for info on my December projects including a show at the Cactus Club and a special holiday project with Third Coast Digest.

Xoxo,
Lisa

My dearest Folks & Folkettes,

This is going to be a quick one because I’m at work, but there are a few things I have to tell you.

First, the Live Album Recording is THIS SATURDAY! As in, two days from now. Mark your calendars, come to Linneman’s, be a part of random Milwaukee-music history.

Secondly, tune in TODAY (Thursday the 17th) at 1pm to WMSE 91.7 FM. I’m going to be interviewed by Dori on The Girlina Show! Not in Milwaukee or near a radio? Stream the show live at www.wmse.org!

Thirdly, check out www.fan-belt.com tomorrow. I did an interview with them this week about the live recording and it’ll be posted tomorrow. Thanks to Erin & Fan-belt for being awesome.Fourthly, on Wednesday, September 23rd WMSE is the featured non-profit for community support day @ WHOLE FOODS. Several musicians will be playing throughout the day, including me at 12:30. Come spend lunch with me at Whole Foods! WMSE will get 5% of all store sales that day! Hope to see you there.

And finally, I love you more today than yesterday (but not as much as tomorrow). I am nervous and excited for all the possibilities Saturday will bring. As you know, a live recording is only as strong as the energy coming from the audience. This is why I want you there. I can't wait to show you what we've been up to.

Love,
Lisa

August News - August 16, 2009

"We did not change as we grew older; we just became more clearly ourselves." –Lynn Hall

My dearest folks and folkettes,

I have been changing all summer. I changed my address and career (sort of) first. Then I changed most of my light bulbs over to the eco-friendly kind. And Friday afternoon I changed my haircut– or at least I thought I was, but it pretty much looks the same.

I am very excited to finally tell you that we will be beginning work on our second album tomorrow night. However, we will not be in a studio, we will be rehearsing in a basement on the East Side. This is because our second album will be recorded live on September 19th at Linneman’s Riverwest Inn.

This recording is very special to me. I have been working on these songs for a long time, some of them since even before the first album. I hope you will join us that night as we try to capture something quite elusive. I have reassembled my Borrowed Band for the evening and we are preparing for magic, or something quite close to it.

The thing with a live album is that so much of it depends on the energy of the audience. And there is no sincerer energy that I can think of than that of friends. I can’t imagine this album being what I want it to be without all of you there. Read on for details.

All my love, most truly and always,

Lisa

News from the cusp of April & May - April 25, 2009

"Music was my refuge. I could crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to loneliness." (Maya Angelou)

Hello loves.

I’ve been listening to the same 5 songs on repeat since Monday. It has been a week of circles, feeling like I’ve traveled so far only to find myself looking at all-too-familiar scenery. It’s like in those old cartoons when Tom & Jerry would chase each other for half an episode running by the same series of table, lamp, chair, table, lamp, chair. Similarly, I am running past a series of Dylan, Newsom, Mitchell, Howe & Hannigan. But even circles get you somewhere.

By the end of this week it will be May and all the hardships of a long winter will officially be shed from our tired bodies, save for the old Wisconsin battle scars. On May 7th I will be opening for Heidi Spencer & The Rare Birds at The Estate. Please join us. I have lots of new material and so much to tell you.

WMSE Pledge Drive!

Next week is the WMSE (91.7 FM) Spring Pledge Drive! WMSE means a lot to our community but it also means a lot to me personally. My music has been featured on both their Local/Live & Female Focus shows over the past few years, and I was so thrilled to be a part of their "Local/Live on the Drive" project, which brought Milwaukee Bands to Transit TV’s around the country (http://www.onmilwaukee.com/music/articles/bandsonbus.html).

WMSE depends on listener and community support to continue the important work they do. Even a $5 donation helps, especially now since one of the goals of this drive is to increase their number of active financial supporters to 4,000.

Please consider donating to this spring’s pledge drive. Donate online by going to www.wmse.org and clicking on the pledge drive link or by calling the station next week during the on-air pledge drive (414) 799-1917.
Please help support this Milwaukee institution!

November News - November 18, 2008

“In the depths of winter I finally learned there was in me an invincible summer.” (Albert Camus)

I thought of you last night as I left work to find I had missed the first real snow-- the one that after weeks of small flurries, finally sticks to your car and shoe laces and hair. It isn't that I had forgotten you or that I haven't wanted to write... but where does one find extra hours in the day? I have often wondered if we all teamed up and ran to the east at the same time, would our tiny feet slow the earth just enough to make the afternoons longer? And is there a way to only do it on Sundays (which are the best days for long afternoons)?

I am busy as always, but I will be playing two very, very short sets this month. I do hope to see you. If not, I wish you the happiest and fullest of Thanksgivings. The kind that leaves you sleeping in front of the television, one button shamelessly undone on your pants. If you find the time this holiday season, definitely go see “MURDERERS” at Next Act Theatre (www.nextact.org). It is brilliantly done and a wonderful break from the usual holiday productions.

As always, keep your feel on the ground. There are children on other planets that don’t even have gravity.

Love,
lisa

October News - October 4, 2008

Hey there.

It's been awhile since you've gotten one of these monthly updates from me. The first reason is that not a whole lot has been going on. The second reason is that I've been working hard settling into my new full-time job. Thanks for being patient while I became a grown-up.

As I write this, I am at work (yes, I'm occasionally required to work on Saturdays) and I've realized it isn't working on Saturday that's the problem--it's getting up at 7am that starts to get me down. Especially now as the morning temperatures dip below freezing and I find it nearly impossible to coax my poor bare feet out of bed and onto the cold hard wood floors.

I've got a few shows coming up. I hope you will join me for one or two or three of them. And perhaps we can have a cup of coffee and play a game of scrabble and learn more about one another... and together we can remember to put on socks before we go to bed.

Keep listening.
Love,
Lisa Gatewood

August Musings - August 6, 2008

“Some people feel the rain. Others just get wet.” (Bob Dylan)

My dear Augustettes,

As always I am startled by August. It seems that we always creep towards the 4th of July so hesitantly, but then the rest of summer races through our fingers. It’s been a busy, but good one for me. I’ve been so flattered to have gotten messages from people around the country who have taken note of my song “Cleared for Departure” while riding the bus. A big thank you to WMSE for their tireless hard work in launching “Local/Live on the Drive”. It’s a great boost for Milwaukee artists and it’s humbling to be chosen as a representative of such an amazingly talented pool of musicians.

Many thanks to those who came to B.Radley’s CD release party in July. It was an amazing evening and his new album “Jigsaw Wing” is not to be missed. I have two gigs this month. Please consider coming out to enjoy either one or both evenings of music.

love,
lisa

New Song!

I was very honored to be hired to perform at a wedding this past weekend. The couple found me through the WMSE video player. In addition to performing a set of covers & originals at the wedding, I was commissioned to write a song specifically for them. What began as a simple project, morphed into something really lovely that I’m very proud of. The recording (engineered by Tony Scholl at Sound Sound Studios) features violinist Jessica Gethin, of the Australian band Toby. Having her on the track is more than I ever could’ve hoped for, she sounds amazing and it was a lovely twist of fate that she was staying upstairs from the studio while in town to perform at Summerfest.

July News - July 7, 2008

"Not being able to sleep is terrible. You have the misery of having partied all night... without the satisfaction."-- Lynn Johnston

Hello Folks & Folkettes.

It’s nearly 3 in the morning and I can’t sleep, so I thought I’d use this opportunity to set down my July newsletter. My solo road trip was a huge success in that I made it to my show in Virginia on time and I came back in one piece. My blog is still up at www.lisagatewood.blogspot.com, so if you missed any of it, you can check in there. I should put some pictures up at some point. Maybe I’ll do that next, since I don’t know if I’ll ever go to sleep again.

Before this trip I never really understood how people could travel alone. I stood in awe of women who jetted off to Rome or Paris with no make-out companion (after all, that is what you do in those cities... or so I’ve heard). “How incredibly lonely,” I would think to myself while secretly mocking their shoes. But after three days solo in Washington, DC, I felt very different. It was actually nice to enjoy the museums and not have to live by anyone else’s schedule. I would return back to the hotel whenever I pleased and eat chinese food in bed while enjoying my free HBO. I also took great pleasure in figuring out the commuter train all by myself. In a strange way I rather liked being alone and I’m currently planning my first trip to Paris, sans co-kisser, in my overactive imagination.

Thank you to all of you who made it out for my Riverwest Farmer’s Market gig last month. We had to pull the plug halfway through the show due to rain and high voltage. For those of you who showed up after I called it quits, my most sincere apologies. I hope you at least got some flowers. I have one show this month, and I really hope you’ll join me for it. I’ll be opening for B.Radley (appearing as “The Canadian Tuxedos”) at his CD release party on the 18th over at Linneman’s. I’ll go on second that night, so please stop down– I’ll have lots of time to hang out.

I guess that’s it for me. I’m still job hunting, still sleeping far too late, and still counting out my change for coffee. But things are good. I’m more fortunate than most, and I owe a lot of that to you.

love,
lisa

“What lies behind us and what lies in front of us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” (Ralph Waldo Emerson)

I’ve been putting off writing this month’s newsletter because my future is in such a state of flux that I don’t quite know what to tell you.

This is what I do know: I’m moving out of my apartment in a week. I also graduate in a week. I leave town on June 1st. I’m playing a show in Virginia on the 3rd. I will probably be back here by the end of June.

This is what might be true: I might be playing a show at Linneman’s in July. I might be starting a blog so that you can read up on my travel experiences while I’m away. I might be buying an iPhone. I might be listening to my own CD right now (in a very non-conceited way)– okay, that’s true.

This is an exciting and terrifying juncture for me. Thanks to all of you who have worked your magic to make it a little easier for me. And for those of you who chose to make it a little harder– well, we all have our reasons. There are some exciting possibilities on the horizon that I’m not really ready to talk about just yet, but it’s all good stuff and all very exciting. It may involve a puppy.

Take good care of yourself in June. I’ll be in touch if it’s necessary, but if not, I’ll hopefully see some of you in July.

If anyone has boxes, I desperately need them.

lisa

March News - March 10, 2008

"When I got my first television set, I stopped caring so much about having close relationships." -- Andy Warhol

I am in a very serious relationship with the HD flat screen television in my bedroom. I had not had a television in my room since I moved out on my own. "What does a single person in a small apartment need with two TV's?" I thought. Looking back now, I can't believe how misguided my thinking was. Between the TV in my bedroom and my crock-pot, I've never been so in love. In fact I'd forget that I was single all together if it weren't for the delivery guy from "Chopstix" who knows me by name and only brings one fortune cookie no matter how hard I try to convince him that the food is for me and my date who is
really real and really my boyfriend-- my very exclusive HD flat screen boyfriend.

I am playing two shows this month that are perfect for those of you who can never make my weekend performances. The first is next week Tuesday. I'll be singing a few songs with the Chick Singer Night band over at Caroline's Jazz Club. This showcase event will feature six artists, so it's a great way to spend $8 and see a whole lot of talent. They are having a contest to see which artist brings out the most people. So when you show up be sure to tell them that you're there to see Lisa Gatewood. I'm playing first, so come out early! My second show I am very very excited about. Every Monday night, Linneman's Riverwest Inn has a free concert after Poet's Monday. It's usually the same people who take those slots BUT there are five Mondays this March, so Linneman's asked me to take the slot on the 31st. I'll go on at about 10pm and play for a couple hours. It's a free show and I know all you theatre folk out there are off on Mondays, so please come and hang out. We'll have a beer together. This is going to be a great show.

I am praying for the end of this winter and to see you all very soon. I have begun packing up my apartment and dreaming of what comes next.

February Newsletter - February 2, 2008

“Don’t play with matches and valentines.
You might burn mine by accident.”
Heidi Spencer, Somewhere in February

I have spent a lot of time in doctors’ offices during the past year. After about a dozen x-rays in that time, I found myself yesterday morning allowing an x-ray tech to go through the whole introduction spiel even though I knew it by heart. Not only did I let her show me where the robes were, tell me what to take off/ what to leave on and instruct me on how to use the lockers in the dressing room, but I found that I was feigning surprise the whole time for her benefit. I just wanted her to be able to do her job and feel good about this well rehearsed introduction to radiology. I don’t know why I do things like this– I suspect it’s somehow connected to the ridiculous impulse that compels me to continue buying ranch dressing at the grocery store for someone who doesn’t even eat at my house anymore... but I’m not quite sure how they are connected yet. It’s just a feeling.

A lot has changed over the past year. I am now completely healed (According to my doctor) and just when I thought things might go back to normal, I find that nothing is going back to normal. We are about to go through a series of changes here. First of all, I’m sad to tell you that after years of friendship and service, the Mosaic Piano Bar is closing. I have played countless shows there and Chip has been a huge supporter of independent artists. It’s really sad for us to lose that venue. I want to thank Chip for all he has done for me: Taking a chance on an unknown singer, booking me basically whenever I needed a gig, paying me even when no one showed up. Thank you. There will be a party on the final night at the mosaic (February 9th). I won’t be playing, but I’ll definitely be there. I hope you will be too. Let’s send Chip out with a bang to thank him for all he’s sacrificed for local musicians!

It is also with a sad heart that I tell you Clay, a staple in the Riverwest community, passed away last month. He was a regular and a good friend to the old gang at Bremen Café. He was a fan of everything, of life, and always made me feel happy. We will all miss him very much and are keeping him and his close friends in our thoughts and prayers. It is the end of an era.

With the Mosaic closing and Bremen changing ownership (and graduation looming in May) I’m not quite sure what my future here in Milwaukee will be. I’m thinking it might be time to go see what the rest of this big world has to offer me... but we have time to figure all that out. In the meantime, I’m playing a benefit show tonight and opening for a band on Valentine’s Day. So come out and see a show, buy a CD and let’s enjoy it while it lasts.

your valentine.
lisa.

January Newsletter - January 6, 2008

“I made no resolutions for the New Year. The habit of making plans, of criticizing, sanctioning and molding my life, is too much of a daily event for me.” ~Anaïs Nin

That quote is, in fact, true for me. This year my only resolution is to finally admit that I fully intend to continue all the same ridiculous behaviors I indulged in last year... but this year they will mean more.

Peter Mulvey’s song “Tender Blindspot” (featured on his new album NOTES FROM ELSEWHERE) starts, “It’s cold, but at least the sun is out...” Today is exactly like that. Of course later he says, “The days are short and gray. It is the hardest time of year” and unfortunately that is also true. It’s the afternoon of the 3rd and I’m taking a break from writing my rent check to jot down my latest happenings for you. I brought in the New Year singing with “Boo The Band” over at the Coach House Grill in Big Bend. It was nice to start the new year with some very special friends. That’s all that really matters in the end.

I’ve been writing a lot lately. Since my CD release, I’ve added about 5 songs to my set and a new one will be complete in a day or two. It’s nice to be writing again and it starts me thinking about (drum roll please) another album.... at some point. Probably not in 2008, but maybe 2009?

I only have one show of my own this month and it’s up in Sheboygan, WI. If you’re in the area, I hope you’ll come join us. Heidi Spencer will be opening and it doesn’t get much better than that.

Welcome to 2008 folks.
Congratulations, the future is here.

December Newsletter - December 3, 2007

“It’s coming on Christmas. They’re cutting down trees. They’re putting up reindeer and singing songs of joy and peace. Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on.”– Joni Mitchell (River)

Snow is everywhere. This time of year turns my busy street into a microcosm. We all hunker in for a long winter, frequent the same small grocery store for rations, commiserate in the same bar at night, and feel a little closer to each other when we realize we could stay like this forever and want for nothing. My neighbor across the street, Jason, has been the happiest addition to this world. He comes over often for a home cooked meal and the people at the bar down the street think we’re dating... in the spirit of the holidays, we don’t correct them. Anyway it’s nice to be part of a whole every once in awhile. Even if it’s for pretend.... especially if it’s for pretend.

This newsletter finds us at the end of another year. I am amazed when I look at the span of it. Spinal surgery in February, lots of studio work, Lindsay & Josh’s wedding, a beautiful week in Door County for Laura & Jonathan’s wedding, the “I’ve Read Salinger” release party, a new addition to my small group of most trusted friends and lots of shows. This December I am remembering the good and bad times that 2007 brought us. My heart is with all my friends who lost someone this year. It was more than a few. I trust that 2008 can do nothing but be happy, happy, happy.

I'm honored to again be nominated for "Best Acoustic Musician" and "Best Female Vocalist" by the readers of the Shepherd Express. Thank you to all of you who voted. The award ceremony is Tuesday night and I will let you know if I win. Although this year I might wait a day or two... you know, just to make sure.

I will brave the cold this Saturday for one of those lovely shows at the Mosaic. Please come. We will be warm there.

Happy Holidays to each of you. I hope you know just how important your continued support and presence is to me.

Keep Listening.
Love,
Lisa Gatewood
